Captain Cook Discovers Cape Foulweather

Captain James Cook was born in 1728 and grew up to be a legendary explorer of the Pacific ocean. He was first sighted in Oregon after he discovered Hawaii. He was the first to stand on top of the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint at the top of the 500-foot cliff on Cape Foulweather. He gave it that name due to the foul weather he and his crew encountered on their journey. Cape Foulweather can be viewed from the Inn at Otter Crest.

The Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint provides a breathtaking view of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. This is the largest lighthouse in Oregon and can also be viewed from the Inn at Otter Crest. The scenic viewpoint also has a spectacular view of the Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area. This area is a popular whale-watching spot with a huge punchbowl-looking geological structure, hence where it got its name.

Beverly Beach State Park

The Beverly Beach State Park is a short walk from the Inn at Otter Crest. Tucked between Cape Foulwather and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Beverly Beach State Park is the largest creekside campground in Oregon. Here you can find spectacular whale-watching viewpoints, 5 walkable miles, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium
