Experience Oregon Coast Storm-Watching

The perfect storm-watching opportunities depend more on the ocean conditions than the actual weather. The best time to catch some wave action is during the winter, from November to February. Nowhere has a better view than the rocky shoreline around the Inn at Otter Crest. Last year, we had a couple of big days when the tides were very high (called king tides), and the sea was very rough. Most of the parking along the shore was packed with sightseers and photographers. Don’t miss out on the action this year! This winter’s king tides are December 22-24 and January 20-22!

5 Storm-Watching Tips From the Inn at Otter Crest

  1. You can watch a magnificent Oregon Coast storm from the comfort of your oceanfront hotel room balcony. The Inn at Otter Crest is nestled right by the action!
  2. If you want to venture closer to the shore, make sure you are at a safe distance. The Oregon Coast winter storms are breathtaking because of their ferociousness. There might be landslides, fallen trees, and strong waves that sweep onto the shore. Stay far  enough back that the ocean cannot touch you. Beware of the beach during high tide periods. We get sneaker waves that come in much higher than the waves around them.
  3. Bring binoculars so you can see the waves more clearly.
  4. Don’t forget your camera either so you can capture the gorgeous views.
  5. Start planning your Oregon Coast storm-watching trip by looking for a forecast of strong winds and high waves. Some great resources are the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Oregon King Tides Project, and the National Weather Service.
